The Brazilian four-eye lives in fresh and brackish water bodies, in which algae and tina grow in large numbers, however, it gives preference to brackish water, very rarely entering sea and fresh water.
Its habitat is distributed from the south of Mexico to the north of South America. Latin name - Anableps anableps. On the body of this fish there are five stripes arranged horizontally, which are either brighter or less, which depends on the condition of the fish. It is this type that is most often sold in our pet stores, however, it sometimes happens that Anableps microlepis are also imported.
Brazilian four-eyes are large fish, the length of which can be up to 25 cm. They live near the surface of the water.
They owe their name to the unusual structure of the eyes, which are divided by the epithelial septum into the upper and lower parts, which gives these fish the opportunity to see what is happening above and below the water.Four-eyed fish (Anableps).
Thanks to such an arrangement of the eyes, these fish are looking for prey and timely notice a possible danger. Most often, four-eyed animals live in estuaries and in small lagoons.
When keeping Anableps in an aquarium, you need to adhere to certain requirements. The aquarium should be shallow with warm, not less than 25-28 degrees C, brackish water. The air near the aquarium should be high in humidity. Since these fish hunt insects and at the same time jump out of the water, the aquarium must be covered with glass. It’s also nice to arrange for them a small “beach” of their sand or pebbles, on which the fish will happily stick out of the water and relax. When keeping the four eyes in the aquarium, you must use a quality filter.
Having a good filter is very important. The food consumed by the four-eyed contains a lot of protein, so it is important that the filtration system removes their excrement in time. Optimally, if you have a powerful outdoor filter, and its pipes can become an integral part of the interior of the aquarium. As an option: on the "beach" with their help you can arrange a small waterfall.
In no case should it be allowed that there are sharp objects in the aquarium, so that the fish can not injure their eyes. If you choose stones to decorate the aquarium, they should be extremely smooth, if you put pieces of wood in the aquarium, then make sure that there are no sharp knots and notches along their edges. From vegetation, preference should be given to salt tolerant species and to ensure that there is enough free space on the surface of the water.Four-eyes feed on insects.
Despite the fact that four-eyed animals feed on insects in their natural habitat, there will be no problem feeding them in an aquarium. They gladly eat frozen bloodworms, small pieces of meat and fish, cut mussels and shrimp. If the fish begin to pick and choose, try changing the feed. You need to diversify their diet, the best option would be if you can feed them live food. Some fish of this species eat flake and tablet food.
Reproduction of these fish is not an easy task, as females are most often on sale, but males are a rarity. And if you get a male copy, then you can assume that you are very lucky. But this is not one problem, there are others. The main one is that the copulative organ of the male, which is a modified anal fin, is either right- or left-handed and, accordingly, can bend only to the right or only to the left. Therefore, it is important that the females come across you that are suitable for this particular male: the left-sided female can mate only with the right-sided copulative organ, and vice versa. The special structure of the eyes allows the fish to see what is happening simultaneously under the water and above it.
To have a better chance of success in breeding these fish, it is best to get a group of four-eyed eyes and give them the opportunity to independently choose their mating partners. These fish live well in a team consisting of 6-8 individuals.
Excessive fertility of the four-eyed can not boast. If the conditions of detention fully satisfy them, then they can produce up to 4 broods within a year, and each brood will not exceed eight individuals. The born fry are large enough - up to 2.5 cm. The larger the fry, the greater the chance of survival.Immediately after birth, the fry are able to eat on their own.
Only the born fry are already able to eat insect larvae. And if they get enough food, they will grow very quickly. Another necessary condition for the rapid growth of young animals is the frequent change of water in the aquarium. So that all offspring remain intact, it is better to grow it separately from adults.
