Cornish Rex (English Cornish Rex) is a breed of short-haired domestic cats, unique in its kind. All cats are divided into three types of hair in length: long-haired, with a length of up to 10 cm, short-haired with a length of about 5 cm; plus there is still an undercoat, which is usually very soft, about 1 cm long. The difference between the Cornish Rex is that it has no core coat, only undercoat.

Breed history

The first Cornish Rex was born in July 1950, in the county of Cornwall, in the south-west of England. Serena, a regular tortoiseshell cat, gave birth to five kittens on a farm near Bodmin Moor.

This litter consisted of four ordinary kittens and one extravagant, cream color with curly hair, reminiscent in structure of astrakhan fur. Nina Ennismore, the owner of Serena, called this cat, and it was the cat, Kallibunker.

He grew up and was still very different from his brothers: they were squat and stocky, and this one was thin and tall, with short and curly hair. Nobody knew yet that this was born a cat, from which all animals in a new breed will appear.

Ennismore found that the hair of the Kalibunker was similar in structure to that of the Astrex rabbits she had previously held. She spoke with the British geneticist A.C. Jude, and he agreed that there were similarities. On his advice, Ennismore brought Calibunker to his mother, Serena.

As a result of mating, two curly kittens and one ordinary kitten were born. One of the kittens, a cat named Poldhu, will be the next link in the development of a new breed.

Ennismore decided to name her Cornish, in honor of her birthplace, and Rex, for its similarity with rabbits of the breed Astrex.

A characteristic feature of a recessive gene is that it should only prove itself if both parents pass it on. If one of the parents gives a copy of the gene responsible for straight hair, then the kitten will be born ordinary, since this gene is dominant.

Moreover, if an ordinary cat and an ordinary cat are carriers of a recessive gene, then a kitten with rex hair will be born.
In 1956, Ennismore stopped breeding due to financial problems and the fact that Kalibunker and Serena had to be put to sleep. The British breeder, Brian Sterling-Webb, became interested in the breed and continued to work on it. But, on his way met many failures and difficulties.

For example, Poldu was accidentally neutered, due to carelessness during tissue collection. And by 1960, in England there was only one healthy cat of this breed, Sham Pain Charlie. He had to be crossed with other breeds and ordinary cats to keep them in their native land.

In 1957, two cats were purchased by Frances Blancheri and imported into the United States. One of them, the red tabby, never had offspring. But the cat, blue, nicknamed Lamorna Cove (Lamorna Cove), arrived already pregnant.

The father of the kittens was poor Poldu, even before he met the scalpel. She had two curly kittens: a blue and white cat and the same cat. They became the ancestors of literally every Cornish born in the USA.

Since the gene pool was very small and no new cats were expected from England, these cats were in danger of extinction. American breeder Diamond Lee, bred them with Siamese, American Shorthair, Burmese cats and Havana Brown.

Although this changed the physique and shape of the head, it expanded the gene pool and created a wide range of colors and colors. Gradually, other breeds were excluded, and crossing with them is currently prohibited.
Gradually, slowly, this breed gained recognition, and by 1983 it was recognized by all large felinological organizations. According to CFA statistics for 2012, it was in ninth place in popularity among all short-haired breeds in the USA.

Breed description

Cornish Rex is characterized by a slender, athletic physique; curved profile; a curved back and a long, slender body. But, do not let this subtlety fool yourself, they are not at all weak.

Under an ultra-short, curly hair, a muscular body with strong bones is hidden, as well as claws and teeth for those who decide to offend a cat.

These are medium and small sized cats. Mature cats weigh from 3 to 4 kg, and cats from 3.5 to 3.5 kg. They live up to 20 years, with an average life expectancy of 12-16 years. The torso is long and thin, but not tube-like, as in Siamese.

In general, the cat consists of elegant curved lines. The back is arched, and this is especially noticeable when it is standing.

Paws are very long and thin, ending with small oval pads. The hind legs are muscular and in proportion to the rest of the body look heavier, which allows the cat to jump high.

At the Feline Olympics, Cornish would definitely set a world record in high jump. The tail is long, thin, whip-like and extremely flexible.

The head is small in size and egg-shaped, where the length is two-thirds greater than the width. They have high, pronounced cheekbones and a powerful, clearly visible jaw. The neck is long and graceful. The eyes are medium sized, oval and wide apart.

The nose is large, up to one third of the head. The ears are very large and sensitive, stand upright, widely spaced on the head.

The coat is short, very soft and silky, quite dense, evenly adheres to the body. The length and density of the coat may vary from cat to cat.

On the chest and jaw it is shorter and noticeably curls, even vibrissae (mustaches), they have curly hair. These cats do not have a hard outer hair, which in ordinary breeds forms the basis of wool.

Wool consists of unusually short outer hair and undercoat, which is why it is so short, soft and silky. At the biological level, the difference between Cornish Rex and Devon Rex lies in the set of genes. In the former, the recessive gene of type I is responsible for wool, and in Devon Rex II.

Allowed a large number of colors and colors, including point.

Character

Usually the first meeting with a cat in which the ears are similar to the ears of a bat, eyes are like plates, wool on end for a person ends in shock. Is it a cat, in general, or an alien?

Do not worry, the Cornish looks unusual, but by nature it is the same cat as all other breeds. Fans say that a unique appearance is only part of the positive qualities, their character will make you an adherent of the breed for many years. Energetic, smart, attached to people, this is one of the most active cat breeds. It seems that they never grow up, and remain kittens both in 15 years and in 15 weeks.

Many enjoy games with the ball that you throw, and they bring time after time. They love interactive toys, teasers for cats, whether mechanical or human-driven. But, for Cornish, everything around is a toy.

Better hide those things that may fall off the shelf or break. The cat protection of your house to the very top and inaccessible shelf is the first thing to do when purchasing this breed. This is not because they are such dirty tricks, just, they play ... and flirt.
They are not only gamers, but also climbers, jumpers, runners, sprinters, there is not a single cup that would feel safe. They are very curious (if you say annoying), and have magical legs that can open a door or cabinet. Smart, they use their full potential to get into forbidden places.

If you want a calm, quiet kitty, then this breed is clearly not for you. They are active, annoying cats that always need to spin under their feet. Cornish people need to take part in all your affairs, from working at the computer to bedtime. And when you get ready for bed, you will see under the covers something like a cat in shape.

If they do not receive their share of attention and love, then they will always remind themselves. Usually they are silent cats, but they can say if something is wrong. Their voice is as different as they are, and each cat has its own set of sounds.

But especially they like dinners, and any activity at the table. The evening will not be evening, without this cat pulling a piece from the table, right under your nose, and then staring with big and clean eyes.

Their activity makes them eternally hungry, and for a normal life they need a lot of food, which can not be said for their fragile physique. Some of them can become quite fat in later years if they are overfed, but others retain slim figures.

Allergy

The tales that Cornish Rex is a hypoallergenic breed are just a myth. Their wool remains much less on sofas and carpets, but does not help allergy sufferers. And all because there is no allergy to cat hair, but to Fel d1 protein, secreted with saliva and from the fat glands. During licking itself, the cat simply smears it in the coat, hence the reaction.

And they lick themselves just like the rest of the cats, and also produce this protein.

The lover is told that people who are allergic to cats can still contain these cats, provided that they are bathed weekly, kept away from the bedroom and wiped with a wet sponge daily.
So, if you have such problems, then it is better to double-check everything. Remember that sexually mature cats produce much more Fel d1 protein than small kittens.

In addition, the amount of protein can vary greatly from animal to animal. Go to the cattery, spend time with adult cats.

Care

This is one of the easiest cats to care for and groom. But, the sooner you begin to accustom a kitten to washing and clipping, the better. Their wool does not fall off, but nevertheless requires care, albeit more rare.

Given that it is very delicate and delicate, ask the breeder to teach you how to handle it properly so as not to hurt her.

As already mentioned, they have a healthy appetite, which can lead to obesity if she does not have a lot of physical activity.

And considering that they will eat everything that you put in a bowl, then this is more than likely. Empirically determine the amount of food needed for your cat and monitor its weight.
